Cogmed
Working Memory Training

Cogmed Working
Memory Training is a software-based intervention designed to improve
working memory in children with attention deficits. Through active
and engaging exercises, children train at home five days a week
for five weeks. Every participant has a Personal Coach at a Cogmed
Qualified Practice who leads the training, analyzes results and
provides encouragement through weekly phone calls.
Cogmed Working Memory
Training is a proven software-based program designed for
children with attention deficits. 80% of participants have significantly
improved their ability to concentrate and use problem solving skills
after training.
Research
details can be found at www.cogmed.com.
Basic
Training Includes:
• Interview – Training is preceeded by an interview
with a parent (can be carried out over the phone) during which the
child's specific difficulties are assessed. The likelihood of him/her
benefiting from the training is evaluated.
• Start-up session – This gets the child and the
training aide off to a good start.
• Five-week training with coaching sessions – The coach
follows the results of the training over the Internet. Every week
the coach discusses the results and developments with the training
aide in a coaching session.
• Wrap-up session – When the course has been completed,
the coach makes an evaluation with the child and the training aide
and produces a training report. If the training aide is someone
other than a parent, then a parent will also be included in the
evaluation session.
• Follow-up – Five to six months after the conclusion
of training, the coach calls the family to follow up on long-term
progress.
About
RoboMemo
The Working Memory Training program is built around a software application
called RoboMemo. It requires participation for approximately 30
minutes every weekday for five weeks. The software guides the child
through 8 rotating exercises each day. These exercises are designed
to train both the visuo-spatial and verbal working memory. Each
day the exercises become more difficult, as the child’s ability
to handle them improves.
To help parents motivate their children and provide them with feedback,
the program includes support from a personal coach at a Cogmed
Qualified Practice.
Aside from a home computer with an internet connection and speakers,
no additional accessories are required.
An adult version of the program is also available.
RoboMemo:
- Proven program for improving working memory
- Designed for children
- Optional racing game at the end
- Runs on a PC with an Internet connection
Benefits of Cogmed Working Memory Training
Cogmed Working
Memory Training is a home-based program that helps children with
attention problems by training and increasing their working memory
capacity. Clinically-proven results demonstrate that after training,
children improve their ability to concentrate, control impulsive
behavior and better utilize complex reasoning skills. In the end,
better academic performance can be achieved especially in math and
reading.
Improved Working
Memory Can Lead to Better Academic Performance
Most children with an attention problem also have a working memory
deficit. That means they don’t have the same working memory
capacity as their peers. Our program, backed by clinical evidence,
is proven to train and improve a child’s working memory. Post
training evaluations show this helps kids perform better in school.
To put it simply, increasing working memory capacity improves attention
and helps improve academic performance.
Key program benefits
- Improved ability to sustain attention
- Improved impulse control
- Better complex reasoning skills
- Better academic performance
Eight
Out of Ten Children Show Measurable Improvement
Eighty percent of children who complete training show measurable
improvement in attention and complex reasoning skills. Parents and
teachers also report other benefits in daily life: improved social
skills, taking initiative, remembering things and completing tasks
like homework assignments more independently. When asked one year
after training to report on their experience, 79% of parents whose
children had benefited from training reported effects had remained
or increased.
Clinically Proven Results
Our specific program is scientifically validated by clinical studies
published in respected professional journals. There is on-going
research at universities such as Harvard (Children’s Hospital
Boston), Stanford and Notre Dame.
What is
Working Memory?
We use working memory every day. It is the ability to keep information
in your mind for a short time, focus on a task and remember what
to do next. With a working memory deficit, it is difficult to stay
focused, plan next steps, remember instructions, start and finish
activities. Studies show a deficit in working memory often leads
to difficulties in reading comprehension and math.
Signs
of Working Memory Deficits
- Problems focusing
- Easily distracted
- Difficulties starting and finishing tasks
- Forgetting instructions
